T.V. or Not T.V.
It is a bit hypocritical for me to say I am enjoying my Labor Day Weekend thus far considering I don't have a job, and thus no labor(s), nonetheless I can't deny it. The weekend, however, didn't start off promising though. I woke up Saturday morning and I wasn't feeling well. Fortunately I was able to immediately rule out scurvy since I had 6 lime filled Beefeater and Tonics the previous night, and simply arrived at the conclusion that I was hungover. However, as morning turned into afternoon, I started to develop a sore throat and a fever. So, to pass the time I decided to start watching the first season of 24 that my brother and his girlfriend let me borrow. That show, I have decided, is the balls.
24 is like heroin and Kiefer was my reliable pusher. I couldn't help but keep watching episode after episode and was soothed by that calming and hypnotic beeping sound preceeding each show. I literally got the shakes in between changing discs because the two minute withdrawral was too overwhelming. I am pretty good at watching television. I can go for a while before I say "shit, I think it is about time to read a fucking book." However, I have never had a stretch like I had this weekend and stopping for a literary break was not an option. Starting at 12 in the afternoon, I watched the first 13 episodes. During this time, I didn't even leave the house and literally became a prisoner as the only thing in the house to eat was bread and water. When I awoke, I immediately started right back up again and was at the edge of my seat until the very end when Kiefer's wife (SPOILER ALERT!!!) gets killed.
For all its twists and turns, there were two things I didn't like about the show. First of all, the DVD menu didn't have a "play all" option which would have made things a bit easier for me. Secondly, I didn't particularly care for Kiefer Sutherland's taste in women. Both of the women he has history with in the show, his wife and his co-worker/mole Nina, look exactly alike--short haired, emaciated and pasty. If they weren't on this show I bet they would be holding hands and trying to get Becky Hammon's autograph at a Liberty game. With his wife gone and Nina incarcerated maybe Season 2 Kiefer might look to broad-en his pallate.
It is my understanding that the show is about four seasons deep now and must be starting to be a bit stale. However, I am sure that the writers and producers will find ways to keep it fresh. Maybe they can do a season that falls during daylight saving's time and Kiefer has to relive 2 o'clock in the morning all over again. I am getting a bit ahead of myself as I am anxious to watch the following 3 seasons, hopefully within the next couple of days.
24 was a breath of fresh air because I had been getting sick of television. It started last year with the highly anticipated and terribly disappointing second season of The O.C. I definitely had its troubles as it mired through a sophmore slump. Nonetheless, I know how hard it is to be a sophomore, I should know, I was one for three years. Hopefully, it will bounce back and will capitalize on Marissa's ever mounting street credibility. If she does end up going to prison for shooting Chino's brother in the back, at least she will have all the fruit cups she can eat and then throw up. Furthermore, I saw a preview for a new show while I was watching Monday Night Football on ABC. It features Geena Davis as the female Vice President of the United States who is reluctantly thrown into the Oval Office after the death of the president. I think it is called Commander-In-Chief but I think it would do a lot better in the ratings if producers had kept the original title of the show The Breast Wing.
Anyway, I hope all of those who do work enjoy their day off tomorrow and I will do a better job of updating this blog for the 5 people who actually read it. Hope all is well, feel free to post, and take care.
